Utilizing Multiple Technology Vendors to Implement Medication Safety Initiatives

After listening to this audio presentation with slides, the listener should be able to:

  • Understand the need to create an integrated strategic plan when automating different parts of the medication use process.
  • Identify suitable vendors to assist in implementing an organization’s vision for medication management technology.
  • Explain the need for collaboration between health system administrators, internal departments, and vendors when implementing these technologies.
  • Understand the importance of completely rethinking and changing daily processes for pharmacy and nursing when utilizing centralized bar code distribution technologies (carousels, packagers, bar code software) and interfaced unit-based cabinets to support bedside verification.
  • List major challenges to implementing, integrating, and maintaining multiple technologies and databases to sustain bedside verification.
