QuarterWatch® Reports

Did a Cold Remedy Cause Thousands to Lose Their Sense of Smell?

The FDA received hundreds of reports in which two Zicam brand cold remedies were blamed for loss of the sense of smell, sometimes permanently. The products were Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel and Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, both of which contained zinc.

We also examine signals for rosiglitazone (AVANDIA), quetiapine (SEROQUEL) and testosterone (ANDROGEL, TESTIM).

We analyze computer excerpts from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). These reports (best known as MedWatch reports) are a cornerstone of the nation’s system for monitoring the safety of prescription drugs after FDA marketing approval.
